Packaging is where sustainable polymers earn their living. It's the single largest market for bioplastics, the place where PLA and PBAT already compete head-to-head with fossil plastic, and where regulation is pushing hardest.
Most packaging is used briefly and discarded, which makes its end-of-life footprint enormous, and also makes it the most logical place to deploy materials designed to compost or to carry recycled content. It's no accident that packaging is the biggest single application for bioplastics worldwide. Consumer visibility helps too: a clear PLA cup or a compostable bag is something a customer can see and a brand can market.
Regulation, mostly. Across major markets, packaging rules are tightening on recyclability, mandatory recycled content, and substances of concern, and that regulatory pressure is the strongest single demand driver for sustainable packaging materials. Sustainable packaging only works as a system. A compostable tray is worse than useless if it goes to landfill or contaminates PET recycling, the material is only as good as the disposal route available to the person holding it. The hard questions in packaging are rarely "which polymer?" and almost always "what happens after use, where this product is actually sold?" Match the material to the real-world end-of-life, not the ideal one.
