Standards & Certifications

A "compostable" logo is only meaningful if you know which standard it's tested against, and what that standard actually guarantees. This is a plain-language guide to the labels that matter, and the gap between "biodegradable" and "certified compostable."

Why certification exists

"Biodegradable" on its own is close to meaningless, given enough time and the right conditions, almost anything biodegrades. Certifications fix this by defining specific conditions and timeframes: a material is only "compostable" if it breaks down to a defined degree, within a defined time, in a defined environment, leaving no harmful residue. The logo is a shorthand for "tested and proven under these exact rules."

The distinction that matters most

Industrial composting ≠ home composting ≠ soil ≠ marine. A material certified for industrial composting may not break down in your garden, in the ground, or in the sea. Each environment has its own standard. Always check which environment a certification covers, this is the single most common source of confusion and of misleading claims.

The key standards

EN 13432 (Europe)

The cornerstone European standard for industrial compostability of packaging. It sets requirements across disintegration, biodegradation, absence of harmful effects on compost, and limits on heavy metals. If a compostable packaging claim is made in Europe, this is usually the standard behind it.

ASTM D6400 (United States)

The US counterpart for plastics designed to be composted in industrial (municipal/commercial) facilities. Broadly analogous in intent to EN 13432. ASTM D6868 extends similar criteria to coatings on a substrate like paper.

OK Compost / Seedling / TÜV (Europe)

Certification marks (from bodies such as TÜV Austria and DIN CERTCO) that demonstrate conformity. Look for the distinction between "OK Compost INDUSTRIAL" and "OK Compost HOME"the home mark is the harder, more meaningful one for consumer disposal. There are also separate marks for soil and marine biodegradation.

IS 17088 (India)

India's standard for compostable plastics, referenced under the country's plastic-waste and single-use rules. As India's regulation tightens, IS 17088 conformity is increasingly the gate to market for compostable products there.

Soil & agricultural standards

Separate standards (such as EN 17033 for biodegradable mulch films) certify breakdown in soil under field conditions, distinct from composting. Essential for agricultural applications.

The honest version

Certification proves a material can break down under specified conditions, it does not promise those conditions exist where the product is used. A certified industrial-compostable cup still ends up in landfill if there's no industrial composting collection nearby. Certification is necessary, but it is not the same as a real-world environmental outcome. Read the logo, then ask: does the matching disposal system actually exist for my customer?
